Thomas T. Stallkamp: Supply Chain Wizard

Thomas T. Stallkamp is currently vice chairman and chief executive officer at MSX International, a global provider of collaborative enterprise services. Parts of this bio were taken from that company.

During almost 20 years at Chrysler Corporation, Stallkamp helped lead the company to new stability and growth in the uncommonly competitive automotive industry. During his tenure as president, Chrysler was the most profitable company in the auto industry. Indeed, many thought he would be tapped to replace Bob Eaton. His last position in Chrysler was as vice chairman and a board member of DaimlerChrysler Corporation; he left in 2000.

His official Chrysler bio is moderately short:

Thomas T. Stallkamp was named Executive Vice President - Procurement and Supply and General Manager - Minivan Operations for Chrysler Corporation on January 22, 1996.

He directs the departments responsible for Supplier Management and Supplier Development, Materials Supply, and Facilities, Equipment and Service Procurement. He also leads the cross-functional business operations team responsible for the development of Chrysler's minivans. In addition, Stallkamp oversees the Information Services Office.

Stallkamp joined Chrysler in 1980 as a General Purchasing Agent and was elected a Vice President in 1990.

His work and academic background includes:

Stallkamp was born in Bryn Mawr, Pa., on September 6, 1946.

Stallkamp became known for developing new business processes and enhanced partnerships with the automotive supply community, thereby improving product quality and cost efficiencies. As an example, Chrysler's SCORE (Supplier Cost Reduction Effort) program was a successful, structured approach by which suppliers sought ways to reduce cost or to improve product or process performance for the same cost. He pioneered the development of a unique partnership approach to corporate supplier relations under Chrysler's Extended Enterprise concept. These programs focused on reducing overall cost rather than simple parts costs.

We did he leave Chrysler? His public resignation letter says it was not due to any conflicts. Schrempp biographer Jürgen Grässlin wrote, "Stallkamp made the mistake of criticizing too soon, too much. He was too open and perceived to be too strong in character." Hence the choice of spineless and foolish James Holden.

Stallkamp serves on the boards of Visteon Corporation, K-mart Corporation and Baxter International. He is also on the board of advisors of Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business and teaches at Babson College's Graduate Entrepreneurship Center. Stallkamp holds a bachelor's degree in industrial management and economics and a master's degree in business administration from Miami University (Ohio).
