The 2001 Dodge / Plymouth Neon

2001 Dodge Neon Model Year Changes

We all knew this was the year the Neon would finally have its long-awaited 150 hp engine. What we didn't know before was that the new SOHC engine would be given the Magnum label. Horsepower is up 18, and torque is 135 lb-ft, up very slightly from the standard engine's 130 lb-ft. EPA fuel economy ratings are 28 city, 35 highway (manual transmission), the same as the stanard engine. The transmission choices remain from last year.

Dave Duncan wrote about a Car & Driver article which clarified the differences in the new Magnum 2.0 engine: revised valve timing and lift (a different camshaft), electronically controlled dual-plenum intake, and dual exhaust/mufflers which include a 2.25 inch diameter exhaust pipe and stainless steel header.

There are now three Neon models: SE, ES (confused?), R/T, and ACR. The SE has mediocre Goodyear Eagle GA tires (P185/65R14), with optional (standard on ES) P185/60R15 Eagle LS tires. The R/T comes with all-out P195/50R16H Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires, an excellent combination (note the 16" wheels and low aspect ratio for maximum handling) to take advantage of the Neon's sporty suspension. The ACR comes with P185/60R15 Goodyear NCT3 tires.

All models except the SE come with ABS and EVBP brakes. Only the SE uses drum brakes (in the rear).

Running changes from July 2000 include a modified manual transaxle with new second-and fourth-gear ratios, added durability and quieter operation, as well as child seat tether anchors.

Both the Neon R/T and ACR are powered by the Magnum engine and have a trunk lid-mounted spoiler. The R/T has fog lights and black headlamp bezels, as well as a color-keyed instrument panel, unique low-back bucket seats, and other features. The ES model also has a Sport version, with a rear spoiler, 16-inch aluminum wheels, and performance suspension. Leather is optional on the Neon ES and Neon R/T, and comes with side airbags.

A "Sun and Sound" package on the Neon SE offers a power sun roof and 4-disc in-dash CD changer.

A "Sport Group" is available on ES, including a trunk lid spoiler, 16 inch aluminum wheels, sport suspension, performance steering, and tachometer.

New colors are as always available.

Rear center passengers now benefit from a shoulder harness, and people locked in the trunk will appreciate the standard internal emergency trunk lid release.
