Hi all,

Picked up an 01 Dakota. It had two codes when I got it. PO442 and PO455. I got the PO455 to go away (loose filler hoses and fuel pump nut) but have not been able to track down the PO442. I have smoke tested it and have not found any leaks (I have inspected top of tank when smoke testing with my camera phone. Maybe I need to pull the tank down so I can see it with the naked eye). The purge valve did seem a bit lazy so I replaced it. LDP seems good based on my bench test. I also replaced all rubber hoses and the fuel cap (Mopar OEM) as a precaution (charcoal canister, under hood, etc). What could I be missing? Any help would be appreciated.

A medium leak that comes back after being erased is likely real. A medium leak should be much easier to find than a small leak and may be a breach of 0.020" or so. Dry-rotting and cracked rubber hoses were common leakers.
Chrysler TSB# 25-004-01 gave additional diagnostic help for those more difficult evaporative repairs.
I would try another smoke test. Something is being missed here.

Thank you Crown. I got the tank off today and replaced the pump seal just for good measure. I reassembled the fuel filler tubes and pressurized the tank with 2-5 psi or so. I then went ahead and poured soapy water over everything. The small fuel hose leaked a bit regardless how tight the hose clamp was on. So I cut 1/2 inch off each, scraped the rubber off of the tubes, then took steel wool to them. I also cleaned the inside of the rubber fuel filler hoses to make sure there was no rust or whatnot in those. I also replaced the 2 3" hoses that connect the evap hard tube to the top of the tank. I tested it again and it does not leak. Hopefully that was it. Should I erase the code, or drive it and see if it erases?
